RACE101 Graduation Weekend (Premier Driver)

I had long anticipated the graduation weekend for RACE101 that took place last weekend. With hopes high to win the highly regarded Premier Driver Award my mother Elaine, father Kevin and crew member Dustin began our 14 hour drive south toward race city USA. I spent Thursday and Friday touring NASCAR race shops and taking in all that the motorsports oriented area had to offer. Saturday was of course the big day that all the RACE101 students of 2011 and 2012 had been waiting for. Who would be the next representative for RACE101 and who were the new RACE101 prospects for 2012?

As the evening drew nearer I relaxed and took the time to reflect on my time spent at RACE101 and all the accomplishments I had secured over the 2011 season as a result of the mentorship and knowledge I obtained in the program. I realized very quickly that no matter what the outcome and no matter how the awards were distributed I had already achieved my goals I had set at the beginning of the year.

The ceremony began with wise words from Adam Ross, Annamarie Strawhand and Tony Blanchard, mentors and founders of the RACE101 program. The energy was high in the room as parents and friends eagerly awaited for Adam to announce the graduates and award winners. My parents and I mingled with the Gage family over supper and talked racing for the minutes remaining. By this point my heart was racing and I had a feeling that I may be the one to shake Tony Blanchard's hand and receive the premier driver award. Although there was many other very deserving and hard working students I believed I had the extra edge needed to perform and represent the premier driver position. After a quick introduction of the premier driver award my name followed. " We ask you to please join us in welcoming.... Luke Whitteker." At this point I felt a huge sigh of relief. I did it! I had reached my goals and then some!It still feels a little surreal right now but I am motivated and ready to attack any task and take on the responsibility of being premier driver. I hope I make everyone proud!

I know that the students of RACE101 will go on to represent themselves and there racing careers to great success. They have all the strength and tools to reach any goals that they apply themselves to. As a representative of the RACE101 program and of RACE101 students I believe we are breed of our own and a forced to be reckoned with in the motorsports world. Keep an eye on each and every student!

February 7, 2012, DENVER, NC – RACE 101’s inaugural Gala Dinner and Graduation ceremony will be streamed live Saturday night from Hickory, North Carolina. The cybercast can be seen at www.race101.net, and it will start at 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening featuring the announcement of 2011’s graduating class along with special award recipients.

For the first time RACE 101 combined the graduation ceremony with the official introduction of the new class.

“It was important to us to combine a number of celebrations into the same event,” said RACE 101 co-founder and instructor Tony Blanchard. “We are honouring our graduates from last year’s class, but we also plan to introduce significant improvements to our program moving forward, and we wanted to include our new group as well.”

The program’s next Premier Driver will be introduced during Saturday’s Gala, and the faculty admits the decision was tough. One student among the graduating class will be named to compete in the RACE 101 Howe super late model for selected events in 2012.

“We learned that there’s no limit to what our students can achieve,” said co-found Anna Marie Strawhand. “They blew us away with their ambition and their ability to make great things happen. We have high expectations of all our graduates, but only one can be named Premier Driver. I’m confident that we made a great choice, and I’m excited to watch what all of our graduates achieve this year.”

Students from across North America attend RACE 101. It’s a program designed to assist young racers in their areas of need as they progress in the sport. The curriculum is balanced between technical understanding of a race car and its dynamics along with the marketing and media relations skills required to be successful.

“The Premier Driver is something every student wants to win,” said co-founder and instructor Adam Ross. “When you put a group of racers together and create a prize they’re going to compete for it. The Premier Driver is really a tool for us to promote the school, and it’s the best way for us to reward excellence. We believe every graduate should be excited for what lies ahead.”

Along with the Premier Driver title the school will name award winners in the categories of mechanical excellence and marketing excellence along with a few categories that won’t be announced until Saturday.

“The awards have great meaning to us,” said Blanchard. “We’re going to recognize some fantastic achievements, and we’re going to announce an initiative to keep our past graduates involved with the program. The knowledge we share is meant to help our racers throughout their careers even though the program is a one-year course.”

After what seemed like the quickest year ever, the 2011 Race 101 students are now taking the knowledge they have accumulated and putting it to the test on their own. Out of the 15 students in the class one will be chosen as the 2012 Premier Driver at the Graduation Ceremony on Saturday February 11th. For the first time the new class of 2012 will be there to join last years class and be introduced at the end of the Ceremony.

Everyone is hoping to be named the 2012 Premier Driver and work with Tony Blanchard and the Race 101 house car next year but only one person will take the title.

" It seems like it was just yesterday I found out I had been accepted into the program and would be making my first trip down to North Carolina, and now it has come time to chose next year's Premier Driver."
"This past year is a blur, I know I tried my best at every assignment and had great success in my career due to that, but I can only hope it's enough to win the Premier Driver Award." Says the exuberant Cornett-Ching

Learning something new about nearly every aspect of the race car doesn't even begin to encompass what was taught at the Race 101 shop in Denver, NC last year. After a weekend of classes to actually retain any of the information, vigorously taking notes and re-reading was a must.

Sarah is proud to be graduating with her fellow students this weekend and has no regrets about her experience at Race 101. She will take everything she has learned with her wherever she races next and she will be able to use it to advance for the rest of her life. Race 101 is an amazing program designed to help young racers in their areas of need and it certainly does just that.

RACE 101 kicks off third year announcing diverse group of students; New ‘Premier Driver’ to be named at inaugural Gala Awards Dinner

January 10, 2012, DENVER, NORTH CAROLINA – The inaugural RACE 101 Gala Awards Dinner in February will feature graduation ceremonies for the class of 2011 along with the introduction of the 2012 class. Graduates are eager to learn who earned the vacant ride in the school’s Howe super late model with the title of Premier Driver.

Thirteen students completed the course in 2011, and they are being replaced by 18 eager racers from five states and two Canadian provinces.

“The selection process was harder this year than ever,” said RACE 101 co-founder and instructor Tony Blanchard. “We had more applicants than last year, and the overall quality of their resumes is impressive.”

RACE 101 welcomes its oldest student yet as 28-year-old Scott Wylie from Blasdell, New York, accepted his scholarship offer, and four female racers make this year’s group more diverse than years past.

“This will definitely be a competitive group,” said co-founder and instructor Anna Marie Strawhand. “We’ve all met online, and their enthusiasm to get started is overwhelming. I look forward to meeting them at our February class.”

The second weekend in February marks the first time two full classes converge. New students will spend Friday, Saturday, and Sunday learning while graduating students will arrive Saturday for the Gala Dinner and Graduation.

“We want an event that celebrates what we are,” said co-founder and instructor Adam Ross. “Our goal is for every class to network together. The program is one year, but we have made life-long friends. We’re so proud of the racers we’ve had the opportunity to work with. We’re excited for this event.”

The Gala Dinner will showcase various award recipients, and it will also feature a surprise announcement or two.

“We welcome anyone interested in knowing more about the program to attend the Gala Dinner,” said Blanchard. “Tickets are $25, and you can find information at race101.net. Tickets are only available in advance.”

Mike Mahaney - Perseverance

In November, we held our last class for the 2011 students, and one of the things we did was hold 'mock' sponsorship interviews. When I asked the question from each student to say one word that describes them at the end of the interview, student Mike Mahaney said 'Perseverance'.

I asked him to elaborate a bit on that and later I thought it would be good for him to put this in writing and send it to me. I was very impressed, I think you will be too, so I will share it with you here---

FROM MIKE MAHANEY:

"More than half my life has been devoted to fulfilling my dream: to race for a living. I grew up helping my Dad, the "Workshoe," with his dirt modified, learning everything I could. For years I was his only pit crew while really wanting to get behind the wheel myself. At age 14 I started driving everything I could get into - sometimes three days a week in four different classes! I have raced over twelve diffent types of cars: sprint cars, late models, modifieds, you name it. I went to college for a degree in Motorsports just to get the advantage of knowing every aspect of the cars. I'm currently enrolled in RACE101 to learn all I can improve that edge. I am constantly thinking about ways to go faster in a race car. I have worked in race-related jobs - sometimes three at a time - on top of maintaining my own cars, to keep learning while earning money to race. I then even quit a job building race engines that I enjoyed, to work closer to my shop and make more money to keep racing.

Many have told me there is nothing wrong with getting a good job and racing for fun. They could be right but I want to give 100% focus on winning races. All I want to do is race; it's what I love. Now at 22 years old I have 8 years behind the wheel with tremendous improvement and much success, but still no full time ride. My parents have been fully supportive of my goal but they can't afford to fund my racing forever, and they can't sell their farm when Marcos Ambrose offers a ride saying I have heaps of talent...just bring heaps of money. I was praised throughout Richard Petty's Driver Search but came in second to a driver with more pavement experience. I could have given up right there and said maybe I'm just a weekend hobby racer, but I just can't let it go. I will never give up my dream. I will earn a living racing cars someday. That's Perseverance."

Marketing yourself in racing; Become the 'Opportunity' Part I

Opportunity is knocking somewhere. If you’re listening for it you’re on the wrong side of the door.
By nature most people want opportunity to knock. Who doesn’t? But if you put in the effort to make yourself and your racing endeavour the appealing entity it should be then you can become the opportunity for somebody and their business or organization.
I plan to write a series of blogs to share my experiences in the racing business. In many regions of North America motorsports at the grassroots level struggles to get the attention it deserves. In some areas racing is featured at nearly every level of the media. People aren’t that different across our land. If we put in reasonable effort to promote ourselves and our sport we can make a difference. We can each help the industry succeed, and in turn we help ourselves.
You’re likely familiar with the expression ‘opportunity doesn’t knock twice’. The truth is opportunity rarely knocks even once.
Racers and promoters often tell the same story when talking about sponsorship and advertising. They’ll work hard to promote their sponsors with websites, press releases, newsletters, car appearances, new professional car designs and the list goes on. In most cases they never get the chance because they’re never given the opportunity.
Step one towards improving your overall racing experience is to change your mindset. Rather than wait for opportunity to appear you need to become that opportunity. We all know people who are successful in racing - whether a driver or a track promoter or even someone operating a racing business. Why does one succeed while others struggle? While there’s no single answer to all of racing’s challenges there are recurring themes.
From here forward I’ll refer to the racer, promoter, or racing business person as the ‘Opportunity’. If we stop waiting for someone to recognize us for the greatness that we are and start to position ourselves the way we want to be, we then can become the Opportunity.

I plan to write blogs to include my experiences and some of the things we teach through RACE 101. To give some background I have been involved in motorsports my entire life. My parents met at a speedway, and I’ve had the racing bug as long as I can remember.
After a brief racing career consisting of kart racing and open wheel modifieds I turned my attention to motorsports public relations, writing, announcing, broadcasting, and marketing. My educational background is public relations, but like many in the motorsports industry I’ve received much of my education on the job.

RACE 101 faculty faces difficult decision choosing next ‘Premier Driver’; Numerous students deserving of vacant position

December 16th, 2011, DENVER, NC - RACE 101’s next ‘Premier Driver’ will be announced during the annual RACE 101 graduation ceremony in Feburary. The ceremony will fill the spot left vacant since RACE 101 released current Premier Driver Trevor Edwards today.

“Choosing the right Premier Driver is a challenging task,” said RACE 101 founder and instructor, Tony Blanchard. “When you go to the races it’s easy to determine a winner. We use far more than results to determine our Premier Driver.”

RACE 101 was founded in 2009 by Blanchard along with seasoned public relations and marketing specialist AnnaMarie Strawhand and motorsports commentator and public relations specialist Adam Ross. An acronym for Research, Analyze, Consult, and Educate, 1 on 1 – the program was designed to offer aspiring racers the education they need to advance their careers.

“Racing has evolved to the point where a driver has to be their own best salesperson, spokesperson, and ambassador,” said AnnaMarie. “The days of a driver just getting behind the wheel are over.”

Our students have worked hard this year and applied what they have learned to their own racing careers.

RACE 101’s inaugural class graduated at the end of 2010. The class knew that one driver would be named Premier Driver, and that student would drive the RACE 101 Howe super late model in selected races the following year. The competition motivated students to execute the skills they learned through attending classes at RACE 101’s Denver, North Carolina, headquarters, and through online webinars throughout the year.

“Earning the Premier Driver title is definitely motivational for the students,” said Ross. “But I think often times they put too much emphasis on the title when they should be celebrating their achievements. “Only one student will get that title, but we’ve already seen that our graduates accomplish great things with or without our race car.”

Graduates from the 2010 class have made significant waves in their respected areas. Florida’s Michael Cenzi entered the program with no concrete racing plans in 2010. The family owned a late model, but the series he hoped to compete in struggled to form a schedule. Cenzi focused on a safe-driving campaign that drew the support of the American Automobile Association among other businesses. He campaigns throughout Florida educating young people on not texting while driving.

Amanda Ferguson left sprint car racing for super late models, and the young Florida racer also makes frequent public appearances to promote herself and her sponsors. Virginia native and RACE 101 graduate Clifton Savage won the program’s public relations award in 2010. The youngster organized and executed a successful charity race while attending RACE 101, and the second annual event in 2011 was even more successful.

The RACE 101/Howe Super Late Model Debuted this past spring at the PASS 150 event at North Wilkesboro Speedway with driver Trevor Sanborn. The car was fast right out of the box, and Sanborn offered good feedback on the car that helped all season.

“The RACE 101 car is important because even though we teach principles that apply to any division and any driver we still need to perform on the track as well,” said Blanchard. “We took our car to North Wilkesboro with Trevor Sanborn as the driver this spring, and I think we turned some heads when we were fastest in practice.

“We need to combine the success of our students in the program with success on the track. That’s why we’re making a few adjustments for 2012.”

Sanborn relocating to North Carolina to work full-time in RACE 101 shop:

2011 RACE 101 Student, Trevor Sanborn has opted out of the Premier Driver contention. He has come on board with RACE 101 as an instructor, mechanic and R&D driver for RACE 101 owner Tony Blanchard. Here he is shown working with one of Tony Blanchard's younger drivers as an assistant driving coach a few weeks ago.

Trevor Sanborn earned a scholarship to the 2011 RACE 101 program. The 23-year-old Maine native arrived with impressive credentials. He has won numerous super late model races including PASS events, but he knew there was still plenty to learn.

Sanborn and Blanchard recently agreed that Sanborn should remove himself from contention for the ‘Premier Driver’ title. In January he will move to North Carolina to work full-time in Blanchard’s shop helping with the RACE 101 car and with Blanchard’s numerous clients.
Sanborn will serve as a mentor and driving coach in 2012. He will also compete in Blanchard’s super late model and serve as test driver.
“Trevor’s ability behind the wheel will be an asset to my business,” said Blanchard. “Not only will he be a huge help to our next Premier Driver, but he will also help us maintain our race cars. The competition will have to watch out.”

The RACE 101 house car competed just a few times this year. Edwards drove at Winchester Speedway, South Boston Speedway, and most recently at Hickory Motor Speedway where he enjoyed his best finish of 10th place.
Edwards was released as RACE 101 Premier Driver this week after a series of decisions the faculty agreed were unbecoming of RACE 101’s core values. The role will remain vacant until the February graduation ceremony.

This year I have put together a strong season from marketing to charity work to on track performances. With my first win in a Limited Late Model and two podium finishes I proved myself a competitor every race day. I also made my debut in the Nascar Canadian Tire Series and ran in the top ten until a flat tire relegated me to 14th.

Here you will find all the students who received scholarships to the 1 year program held in Denver, North Carolina. The poll was put in place to see how loyal each racer's fan base is. The RACE 101 Premier Driver is a student chosen from each yearly graduating class by the RACE 101 faculty. This student must have fully completed the program and worked hard to complete all assignments and attend all classes throughout the year. This student must show improvement in a variety of skills and have implemented these skills on all levels of our curriculum. He or she must be a leader, mentor and positive representative for the program and fellow students. The Premier Driver will be named at the Official Graduation and Award Ceremony in January. The Premier Driver is awarded the opportunity to drive in selected events in the RACE 101/Howe Super Late Model House Car, and officially represent and make appearances on behalf of RACE 101, and our program sponsors and partners.

School is out for RACE 101 Class of 2011;
Final project will determine RACE 101’s next Premier Driver

November 10, 2011, DENVER, NC - RACE 101 held its final classroom sessions of 2011 last weekend in Denver, North Carolina. The battle to earn Premier Driver for 2012 is intense with just weeks until graduation.
“In racing you’re generally measured by your results on the race track,” said program founder Tony Blanchard. “We look for much more from our Premier Driver. We will choose a driver who is balanced with technical, marketing, and media skills, but most importantly we will choose a driver who exemplifies the core values of RACE 101.”
The students were overwhelmed with studies of chassis dynamics, geometry, and impromptu interviews at RACE 101 headquarters. The group also enjoyed a review of goals surpassed during the year.
“The upcoming Premier Driver is going to have a great deal of responsibility,” said instructor Anna Marie Strawhand. “We’ve discovered that our students learn a lot from each other, and it has been exciting to see relationships develop.
“Our Premier Driver will need to manage his or her own career while serving as a role model for current, former, and future students.”
The Premier Driver will also have the opportunity to test and race the RACE 101 Howe house car with McGunegill horsepower in 2012.

RACE 101 Ambassador program introduced
Faculty also introduced the RACE 101 Ambassador program which will keep graduated students actively involved for years to come.
“We have been honored by our students from 2010 who want to stay involved with the program mentoring current students and speaking to current and potential students,” said instructor Adam Ross. “We’re proud of every graduate of the program, but we’ve recognized an opportunity for certain graduates to stay involved. There is nothing more rewarding than knowing that we’ve touched lives.”
RACE 101’s Premier Driver will be introduced during the graduation ceremony in January of 2012, but not before students complete their final assignment which embodies all of what they have learned during the program.

My third Race 101 Class

As the season ended, I started to eye my trip down to Race 101. This time when I'm there I will be testing the Race 101 presented by Howe motorsports super late model, at hickory speedway. Along with test the super late model, i will have class for three days with Tony B, Anna Marie, and Adam. Being away from everyone for so long I’m very excited to go back and see my classmates. Another exciting part is the Race100 just expanded the shop, and got more technology. I can’t wait to use the new tools and learn even more! Also when were down there I’ll be attending the dirt nationals at Charlotte Motor Speedway, which is really excited The World of Outlaw are awesome.

Cornett-Ching Wraps Up the 2011 Season

After the 2011 season and two banquets Sarah's trophy shelf is overflowing with awards, she collected Most Improved Driver in both the ARCA West Ok Tire Series and the West Coast Sportsman Series where she finished 8th and 4th overall respectively. Sarah would not have had the amazing season she did without her sponsors, and she would like to thank, Snap-On Tools, Aarons, Racecom, ANJ Automotive, Lordco and Serious Performance.

As for next year Sarah is working towards putting together a marketing program to run a limited season in the Nascar Canadian Tire Series and a run for the championship in the ARCA West Ok Tire Series.

This up coming weekend I will be headed back to Denver, North Carolina to attend RACE101 classes that I had earned scholarship to in January of this year. I will hopping in the RACE101 house car to do a few tests laps at famed Hickory Motor Speedway and get some training from RACE101 mentor and owner Tony Blanchard. My knowledge will be put to the test after many online webinars that took place throughout the racing season where we were given weekly assignments and research to complete. My marketing efforts will being closely analyzed and critiqued by marketing "Masters" and RACE101 mentors Adam Ross and Annamarie Strawhand. Also there will be Tony Stevens the reporter/tech savvy/jokester, making sure we are always on our toes with surprise interviews and hard to answer interview questions. I am excited to get back to class see all my fellow students/friends and racers and get the low down on the 2011 racing season. RACE 101 students nearing the finish line; House car competes at Hickory and 2012 Premier Driver announcement around the corner

October 26^th, 2011, DENVER, NC - Success is measured in various ways. With 2011 coming to an end RACE 101 students past and present have surpassed many goals.

While on-track results speak volumes RACE 101’s curriculum involves much more than competitiveness.

“Every one of our students comes with a different goal,” said RACE 101 Founder and head instructor Tony Blanchard. “We work with them to relate what we teach with how it can help them in the present.

“In many cases our students need sponsorship to continue racing at their current level, and in other cases they’re trying to advance through the ranks. Some of our students are happy where they are, and they want to learn everything they can to improve their situation. We pride ourselves in catering to each student’s individual needs.”

At the end of the program each year a Premier Driver is chosen to compete in the RACE 101 presented by Howe Racing Products super late model with McGunegill horsepower under the hood.

This weekend at Hickory Motor Speedway RACE 101’s premier driver from the class of 2010 Trevor Edwards will compete. Program founder Tony Blanchard spent a couple days last week testing. The first day was with current student from Maine Trevor Sanborn. The second day was with less-experienced Edwards.

“The test day was amazing,” said Edwards. “The car feels awesome. I needed more work than the car, but I think we’ll be in great shape for the Hickory race.”

Edwards was chosen as premier driver for his outstanding efforts while in the RACE 101 program both on track and off track. He balanced competitiveness on the track with the necessary time focusing on sponsorship and promotional work to impress RACE 101 faculty. His reward is the opportunity to race the RACE 101 super late model with Tony Blanchard as crew chief.

Scholarship applications are open for the RACE 101 class of 2012, and the battle is on with this year’s group to be named premier driver for the current class. The program has seen great success in its second year. The proof is evident scanning through the current RACE 101 roster.

Brandon Atkinson recently made his asphalt stock car debut. The impressive 15-year-old relocated from Virginia to Statesville, North Carolina, where he could chase his racing dream. Atkinson has seen success racing dirt cars, but the choice to launch a pavement career in one of Hickory Motor Speedway’s toughest classes was a difficult one. Atkinson had a great fourth place result in the prestigious Dwight Huffman Memorial 100-lap event for limited late models at Hickory recently.

“I was confident we could have a strong finish if I kept my nose clean and stayed patient,” said Atkinson. “We only qualified 13^th, but I knew the car was better than that. I’m excited about the strong run.”

On the same weekend thousands of miles away Sarah Cornett-Ching attended the ARCA OK Tire Sportsman Series banquet. The charismatic British Columbia racer was awarded Rookie of the Year and Most Improved Driver Awards to go with her eighth place in the points standings. The stellar ARCA result was accompanied by her debut in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series driving the ‘Cruisin for a Cause’-sponsored Jason White entry.

“This was a great way to end our season,” said Cornett-Ching. “If you told me last winter I would have raced in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series this year and won all these awards I’m not sure I would have believed it. I’m already overwhelmed making plans for 2012.”

One of RACE 101’s youngest students is Derek Robbie from Bellingham, Massachusetts. Robbie’s two open-wheel modified wins are impressive this season, but even more impressive is the extensive promotional schedule run by the 13-year-old. Robbie contacted his local Chamber of Commerce and opened numerous doors through charitable appearances and promotional events. The youngster plans to expand on that in 2012.

Derek Robbie combined his cross country running skills with a charity promotion that included appearing with his race car. Derek has also been able to improve his press release writing skills working with RACE 101 instructors and has created a solid media and blog following for his racing.

“I can’t believe how much I learned this year,” said Robbie. “RACE 101 has shown me that there’s opportunities available to all of us. We just need to open the right doors.”

New England provided a great deal of talented young racers to RACE 101. Veteran Super Late Model racer Trevor Sanborn came to increase his understanding of the race cars he’s seen great success with while teenagers Tommy Stilphen and Sulo Burbank are newcomers to full-sized race cars in the northeast.

Sanborn recently enjoyed his test day with Blanchard in the RACE 101 house car.

“The goal was to get a good feel for the race car,” said Sanborn. “Every time Tony touched the car we got faster.

“At the start of the day we were hitting the rev limiter going into the corner. By the end of the day I was on the rev limiter at the start finish line. We did that just by adjusting shocks.”

Sanborn is among RACE 101’s more decorated drivers, but he fits right in with the rest of the class.

He also wanted to better on his in-car communication skills and was able to do that working one on one with RACE 101's Tony Blanchard.

“The way we’ve developed our program it applies to an experienced racer as much as it does a rookie,” said Blanchard. “We teach theories and principles of racing that are relevant on dirt or asphalt and regardless of the division.

“The public relations and media relations side of the course is applicable to all forms of racing of any type. We’re confident that our curriculum stacks up to any in the market.”

Burbank’s season went better than he anticipated. The Maine teenager won Rookie of the Year in his family’s Super Late Model at Canaan Fair Speedway, and in the ‘Six Pack Series’ he is third in standing just 5 points out of first.

Sulo Burbank worked hard on the track this year and also worked on promoting his team sponsors, seen here in his hometown Memorial Day Parade. Sulo is one of our younger students, but presents himself in a very professional manner.

“I came into this season hoping to win Rookie of the Year,” said Burbank. “We did that, and I was a competitive top five car every week. I have a full season under my belt now, and I’m looking forward to next year.”

While New England provided strong students, South Carolina also had its share. Daniel Alvarez, Amanda Lynch and Bryce Malcolm all attended RACE 101 this year from South Carolina.

Lynch suffered problems early in the season, and her race team is regrouping and looking towards the future.

Daniel ‘the Hammer’ Alvarez used his outgoing personality and strong networking skills to introduce himself to local media and race teams with great results.

South Carolina racer, Daniel Alvarez jumped on garnering media exposure right out of the gate this year opening up many new contacts and opportunities for himself and his racing career.

“I could write a book on the things I’ve learned this year,” said Alvarez. “I think the best thing about RACE 101 has been the people. I’ve met people who really want to see me succeed in racing.

“The steps I’ve taken in the past year have taken me from local dirt tracks to working on a Nationwide team at Bristol. It will only get better from here.”

The Hammer races dirt cars in South Carolina, and when bad luck left his race car destroyed he turned towards networking. He will return to competition before long, but in the meantime he’s enjoying his time on a NASCAR pit crew.

Our three students from South Carolina, Bryce Malcolm, Amanda Lynch and Daniel Alvarez worked together on media and landed a guest spot on a morning television show.

“My understanding of my race car is far better than it was last year,” said Malcolm. “I won a race and finished top five in the points standings. Knowing what to do on the race car to make it better made things much easier.”

RACE 101 had a strong Canadian contingent again in 2011. Along with Cornett-Ching who raced stock cars on the west coast Luke Whitteker and Shayne Pierce campaigned dirt modifieds in Ontario.

Whitteker started the season racing his own car at Cornwall Speedway, and he drove for another team in Quebec. The challenge of multiple race cars led him to leave the second team and focus on his own car. The results were impressive.

Ontario's Luke Whitteker used his on-track performance in combination with raising funds for a local children's hospital.

“It was a learning year,” said Whitteker. “I was excited to race for another team, but I found it much more productive to drive our own equipment and stay on top of adjustments.

“We had a fantastic year away from the track. We raised a lot of money for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, and I have some great sponsor opportunities heading towards next year.”

The opposite was true for Pierce. He drove his family-owned modified at Merrittville Speedway, and during the season he clinbed into another car to compete at Humberstone Speedway with great success.

“It really helped my confidence to get some wins at Humberstone Speedway,” said Pierce. “Racing at different tracks forced me to learn more about the set up on my car, and we worked with local sponsors to do some car displays and build a program to help our team.”

A little south of the Ontario dirt racer Mike Mahaney was making waves in the New York modified racing circuit. Mahaney picked up his first career victory at the competitive Fulton Speedway, and his new technical knowledge was an asset as he traveled to some of the area’s biggest events.

Mike Mahaney ran over 50 races this year all over Upstate NY and was able to utilize the technical knowledge he learned at RACE 101 to give him a competitive edge and even start his own shock building service.

“We raced more than 50 races this year, and I’d say it was a big success,” said Mahaney. “I won my first feature, and I won a track championship at Cayuga County Fair Speedway.

“My goal was to learn about shocks as much as anything else. They’re so important to the car, and I found a huge difference once I started making more educated changes.”

Mahaney actually started tuning shocks for competitors, and one of his customers won the 2011 Fulton Speedway Sportsman Championship.

Jerry Tunney of Pennsylvania also races on dirt, and on to pavement late models in 2011, and he is quite satisfied with his performance in the more powerful race cars.

Jerry Tunney used his RACE 101 scholarship notoriety to open doors for himself with local sponsors.

“We raced this season with an older chassis and motor,” said Tunney. I applied everything I learned from RACE 101, and we ended up being pretty competitive.

“I had one pole position, and five top five finishes. I couldn’t be happier with the season, and I’m looking forward already to next year.”

Virginia is home for Anthony Perez. The RACE 101 student competed at the famous Langley Speedway this season, and he accomplished various goals.

Anthony Perez made the most of his rookie year at Langley Speedway by interacting with the fans and gaining mentorship from experienced racers at the track.

“I was competitive all year, and I finished in the top five of most of my races,” said Perez. “I finished fourth in points, and I learned a lot about networking.”

Perez partnered with local Langley racing mentor and coach, Hudson Hall to increase his marketability and help his learning curve on the track.

Thompson Debut

For the last race of the season I would find myself at the famous 5/8 mile oval, Thompson speedway. The track I grew up around, and dreamed to be racing at one day. During the 2011 World Series of racing weekend I would achieve this goal.
The weekend got a damper start, when Friday's activities would be cancelled due to rain. This meant I would have no heat race, and limited practice to be ready for the race. On Saturday morning, before practice I would get coaching from Dan Meservey once again, to help me learn the track before I turned my first laps. I felt confident when I hit the track. The first 6 laps of practice went as planned. I was turning laps and getting use to the track. Going down the back stretch on lap 7 I felt the car to shudder. I quickly tried to figure the problem out but I was unable to and the car would just shut off. I had to be pushed back to the pits and hope we could find the issue.
After going thru the engine we discovered the distributor cap went bad. We switched it out with a spare and the car started but was not right. Next we would find out the distributor was bad. Now the next task was to find a distributor. Eventually we found a mini stock driver who wrecked his car and took his engine out to put into another car. We asked to borrow their spare and they let us use the distributor for the reminder of the race day.
Due to the distributor issue I would miss all the practice laps available and would have to jump right into the feature. This wasn't anything new to me. I had to make my Monadnock debut with 0 laps on the track as well. To be ready I would watch the rest of the races on the track and get focused. To be smart I would start last place in 17th for the race.
On the start I would not hold back and climb up into the 15th spot. I quickly started to try to maneuver my way around the 14th and 13th place cars driving up beside them several times. It wasn't till around half way till I would pick up 14th position. Right after I made the pass the caution came out for a spun car. I would have to give up 14th and slide back into 15th. Right on the start I would hold my position and started to make my move to get around the 75 and 86 cars. Coming out of turn 2 on lap 14 the 75 and 86 got together spinning into the infield. This would bring out another the caution.
I would restart in 13th place. On the start I would lose a position to one of my mentors, Mark Giordano. I quickly tried to get back around him. I had a few chances but I was never successful. In the end I would have to settle for 11th place. I guess the teacher didn't teach me everything.

RACE 101 Alumni Student Clifton Savage Expands 2nd Annual Charity Event - To Be Held This Monday in Virginia Beach, VA

Newport News, Virginia -- Clifton Savage is gearing up for a weekend full of racing. It is the final race of the 2011 season and with Clifton sitting tied for 5th in points you would think he is more focused on what will happen on track this weekend. But that is not the case, for Clifton he is thinking about how many people he can talk to and how he can get to come out to support his charity race this coming Monday, October 24th, 2011.

After a successful inaugural event last year, Clifton is hosting his 2nd annual Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters Charity Go Kart Event at the American Indoor Karting of Virginia Beach. Having raised $1,782 in last years event, Clifton has really wanted to blow up the event and make it huge this year, and huge it has become! With a second race added to the night with events starting at 5pm the American Indoor Karting facility right across from Lynnhaven Mall will be jam-packed with over 100 local and even national racers from all styles of racing.

This event is holding 2 races each consisting of 10 teams of 5 drivers per team all running together for 100 minutes per race. The adrenaline and excitement will once again be captured by the local Langley Speedway photography crew of PYP and videography by TM Racing Videos. On the night of October 24th, the Virginia Beach facility will be packed with drivers, family and fans all watching the event and even the racing talk show, LetsTalkRacing.tv will be airing a special shoot that night where we will be having guests racers jump on throughout the night of the event as well as some special guests from NASCAR teams.

Dav Weekend at seekonk speedway

This past weekend I raced at Seekonk Speedway for the DAV weekend. The plan of the night was to re-learn the car with the new clip and stay out of trouble. We went into the first practice going to feel the car out and making sure nothing would fall off. As i got more into the run I kept picking it up to full power. Right before the end I got on the throttle hard. Car was tight out due to lack of stagger but it felt awesome to go hard after not racing for 5 weeks.

We made changes to grow the stagger in the rear and went to get ready for the 2nd practice. Due to time constraints we would only get one practice which was upsetting but we moved on and got ready for the heat race.

In the heat race I started 6th. On the start I fell back to 7th and gave myself some room away from the field to feel out my car. I passed the 86 car and started to bring the field back in. With 4 to go we would have a caution for the 86 stopping on the track with engine problems. On the start I missed up the shift but regained myself and caught up to the field again. I wasn't pushing the car hard so i stayed in 6th place to keep my nose clean.

For the feature I would start last, in 14th place. On the start I once again kept a little distance from the field. After an easy lap 1 I started to pick it up. I got by the 32 car and started to go for the 75 car and my first limited win. On lap 5 we would see our first caution for a spin. I restarted 11th. This time I stayed up close to the field but kept an eye out just in case a wreck started. I would get passed by the 5 car but fell into line and started running laps.

Around lap 6 would see a battle between me and the 75 car starting. Gaining every bit I could I got by the 75 car at lap 12 to claim the 10th position. From there, I started to run down more and more cars. 2 cars would drop off the pace and leave the track.

At lap 17 we would have our second and final caution for a broken car on the front stretch. I would restart in the 7th position. On the start I spun the tires but didn't lose any ground. It would take me a lap and half to clear the 75 again but after that I had no troubles and brought the car home in one piece and in 7th position.

With that finish I would get my first pro 4 mod limited division win and grab 2nd in the limited points. I would also move to 9th in the overall points standings. With my first limited win I have to thank my dad for all he did to get my car back on track from the last time we were at Seekonk and wrecked. Next week we will be at Thompson. Cold Hard Facts Of "Driver Development": It Takes MONEY to MAKE IT

As a motorsports marketing professional and instructor, I know that finding funding is the biggest issue at hand for young and up and coming racing talent today. I experience this daily. I firmly believe, and it has been proven time and time again, that if a driver is as good at marketing and getting his own backing as he is driving he or she will succeed. Young drivers must educate themselves on how to go out and raise the money and get the backing. It can be done. Many racers hire sales/marketing people to find sponsors for them, but few find success that way. Ultimately DRIVERS need to know how to sell themselves or they will not be able to advance their careers. ALL RACE DRIVERS need to invest the time into making the calls and sending out the emails just as much as they do driving. I have drivers/students signing sponsors as we speak, even in this economy. You are your best salesperson. Sponsors want to meet the driver, they want the driver to be their celebrity spokesperson. They want a return on their investment too, once they spend the money. Drivers must learn how to attract, land, and manage sponsors. It is more of a necessity today more than ever.

The RACE 101 program offers one-on-one marketing, sponsorship and PR consulting with our experienced instructors. We work with our students individually to make sure they are properly selling themselves and their racing programs, We teach them the basics to the advanced as needed - give them the tools and confidence to go out and sign their own sponsors.

Are you an up and coming talented race driver hoping and dreaming to get noticed by a big team or a NASCAR driver development program? Well you can get noticed but the bottom line is this - bring a BIG CHECK or you are back to the weekly home track racing off your own paycheck or mom and dad's. Do you know how to go out and get financial backing and make the proper connections to advance your career? Our RACE 101 students and alumni do. Don't get left behind. Educate yourself. Sales and Marketing - it's a skill all race drivers must learn and apply to succeed. We spend equal time on our marketing curriculum as we do the mechanical and driving side of our program. We are very proud of our RACE 101 2010 Student Alumni Driver, Michael Cenzi. He was able to take what he learned at RACE 101 regarding marketing, sales and PR and landed a solid multi-year sponsorship program with Triple A (AAA). Michael serves as AAA's spokesman and even filmed a PSA (public service announcement) for a Don't Text and Drive Campaign. Michael races late models in Florida, and is planning a move to NC with his 2012 program.

Another Strong Podium Finish for Cornett-Ching

Sarah went into the night sitting fourth in points unable to gain any positions due to the mathematical possibility, but had high hopes to come home with a strong finish. She did just that at Motoplex Speedway after getting out front early and pulling out to a straightaway lead.

"Our car started out really fast and I wasn't pushing it very hard to stay out front, I was thinking we would be able to save the car and pick it up towards the end. Unfortunately after a competitor blew a motor the track was covered in speedy dry and I had three consecutive outside row starts, we roasted the RR tire off the car trying to keep up and then had to battle to our 3rd place finish."

The #99 team couldn't be more pleased with the season they had in 2011, racing at 5 new tracks and trying new setups in the race car they still proved to be a strong competitor. With the last three races at their home track in Vernon, BC they were able to put an exclamation point on the season with a win and strong podium runs. Going into next year Sarah has big plans and hopes to win over the fans wherever she races.

"I grew so much as a driver this year with a car that was able to run up front it gave me the opportunity to push myself and get the finishes we were looking for. Going into next year, I hope to secure a marketing partner for the Nascar Canadian Tire Series but if we race in the Arca Series again I know we will be a threat for the Championship." Cornett-Ching Claims Top Five

2011 Arca Ok Tire Championship Night
Sarah went into the night 11th in the points standings and knew a strong finish would be necessary to close out the season on a high note. She would leave no doubt in anyone's minds running in the top 3 all night and finishing 4th. This would push Cornett-Ching up to 8th overall in the Arca Series standings for 2011.

In afternoon practice the #99 Snap-on Tools car would post the 3rd quickest time and move from the back of the heat race up to 5th. Cornett-Ching knew she had a car to beat in the main event and planned to keep it up front.

Sarah would run the majority of the race in 2nd position but lose some ground on a restart, despite her efforts to clinch the 3rd position at the checkers she would bring the car home in fourth.

"Right from the start of the day I was confident and I knew we had a car to beat for the feature race. I'm glad we were able to have such a strong run to finish the season off strong."

There is one race left on the schedule for the #99 team in the West Coast Sportsman Series were Sarah sits 4th in points and has one win. On September 24 at Motoplex Speedway in Vernon, BC Sarah will have her sights set on her second victory of the season.

Cornett-Ching has Dominating Run Dashed

The second day of the Hot August Nights mini series at Motoplex Speedway in Vernon, BC started well for the #99 of Sarah Cornett-Ching posting the fastest speed in first practice and qualifying 4th. The team worked hard all day dialing in the car with a few struggles in the heat race the but car came to life in the main event.

Sarah worked through traffic quickly and was leading by lap 4, from there the #99 Snap-On Tools car stretched it's lead over the field until the mandatory pit stop on lap 25. With one of the quickest stops Sarah regained the lead after the field cycled through.

Cornett-Ching was leading by half a lap and feeling good about the car when it started smoking which would eventually lead to a mechanical black flag on lap 45. Sarah had to relinquish her lead and head behind the wall for repairs.

Emerging from pit road after replacing the tail shaft seal on the transmission 10 laps down didn't slow down the talented young driver as she worked her way back through the field to the 2nd spot. With a restart within 10 laps to the end she was put behind the lead lap cars although she felt she had a car to beat the eventual winner to the checkers.
With such a strong car going into the final Arca race of the year the #99 team is confident and ready to put the #99 Snap-On Tools Aarons car on the podium.

My second start at Monadnock Speedway.

Going in to my second Monadnock Speedway start luck was not on my side. Having 3 dnfs in the last 3 races was not what i wanted in my rookie season.

In the first practice i used it as a shack down since we had the car apart from the last race where we were in a wreck. After the first practice we checked the car over and sow nothing was wrong with the car. I got the okay to go out in the second and third practice hard. We fiured out the car was very loose on the exit, so we added some wedge across the back of the car. I procuded to use the 3rd and final practice as a scuff session for my new tires. The car was fast on new tires.

In the heat race i started 4th. On the start i slide the nose alittle but got control and didnt loose any positions. I stayed there for the next 8 laps still learning the track. I was pressured alittle from the 75 but never got passed. The was a touch tight but we decided to keep the car the same as it will be good for the feature.

In the feature I started 11th out of 14 cars. As the green flag came out i settled in to 11th place and stayed there for the first 6 laps till the caution came out. I restarted 10th. I didnt stay there long as i got passed and settled into 11th place. I gained a position under green as the 16 went off the track. with 10 to go i got passed for 11th where i stayed for the rest of the race. I tried to chase the 75 down for 10 but was not able to catch him. The car was very loose off the corner, which made me learn throttle control. Later to be found out the loose off the corner was a bent rear end we suffered from the wreck 2 weeks ago. Ill be back under way in 2 weeks at seekonk speedway.

Penticton racer scores impressive career-first at Motoplex Speedway

17^th, 2011, PENTICTON, BRITISH COLUMBIA - Sarah Cornett-Ching earned her first career late model victory in dramatic fashion on Saturday at Motoplex Speedway near Vernon, British Columbia. The 20-year-old Penticton racer edged her #99 Snap-On Tools-sponsored car past race leader Mark Berrieau on the final turn of the final lap to steal the win.

“I don’t think I could have imagined a finish much more exciting than that,” said an exuberant Cornett-Ching after the race. “The crew worked hard all day long to get the car faster, and it felt great for the feature. This is awesome.”

Cornett-Ching was among the fastest throughout the day’s practice and qualifying, but the team spent plenty of time chasing mechanical issues. The Snap-on Tools crew fixed a vibration in the car and also addressed vapour locking in the fuel system caused by extreme heat during qualifying. Added to her mechanical issues was a neck injury suffered at work during the week. Despite the issues she still qualified fourth fastest.

“With the neck injury and our challenges through the day I hardly had victory lane in my sights,” said Cornett-Ching. “I actually had my dad bring his driving suit in case I didn’t feel well enough to race. I’m glad I stayed in the car

With the 100 lap Hot August Nights feature race underway each car was required to make a pit stop for a right rear tire. Sarah entered the pits for service in fourth place on lap 27 and rejoined the race as the leader with a 13 second lead. Her lead evaporated when the caution flew and the field bunched up for the restart.

“My crew on pit road was outstanding,” she recalled. “They made no mistakes and we gained valuable track position. The caution came out taking away our 13 second lead, but we made the right changes on pit road and were able to keep my car in the top 3 all night.”

A late-race caution set the stage for an exciting finish. With five laps left on the restart Cornett-Ching lined up on the outside of race leader Berrieau. When the green flag flew she battled door to door with the veteran for the top spot. On the final lap she seized opportunity.

“I could see that Mark was sliding up the track,” said Cornett Ching. “I rolled out of the throttle a little early heading into turn three, and I was able to drive under Mark and beat him to the finish.

“It was an amazing feeling to race with one of the best drivers in the province to the checkered flag, and to beat him at the line was icing on the cake. This win is important to give my crew and myself the extra confidence we need going into the second Hot August Nights race on August 27^th.”

Off weekend

August 1, 2011 - On my off weekend I went to Little T speedway to help a friend of mine, Richie Morocco, race his quarter midget. On this weekend Richie was racing both Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. He was also only driving 1 car instead of his normal 2.

On Saturday when I was waiting for Richie's race I got involved with a rookie name Derek Gluchacki. Later to find out I would also assist with him for the weekend. During Derek's race I noticed that he drove a really good line and was smooth. Talking to his dad Joe (also a rookie handler), I informed him we did not need to change the setup much to make the car better for Derek. The next morning I went and found Derek's father to help him work on Derek's car, because Richie was all set for the day's time trials. For time trials I decided to keep Derek's car the same, which was a great move. Derek got fast time. Then we moved to Richie's time trial. Richie also got fast time in his division, Senior Honda.

After the great time trial efforts, we moved on to the heat races. Derek and Richie both had to start in the back in there heat races. It didn't stop either of them. With the slight change I made to Derek's car before the heat race to loosen it up little it was great. He came from last to first and never looked back. In Richie's heat race he had a battle to the checker flag. Richie only had 5 laps to come from the back because the race was shortened because of a exceeding time limit placed on the race. That didn't slow riche down from winning it though. After winning the heat races I decided to keep Derek's car the same for the feature and after talking it over with Richie's dad we did the same to Richie's car because it was so fast.

The first feature was Derek's. Derek started right where he did in the heat race. Coming thru the field from last and leading the race. With 3 to go Derek was involved in a wreck with a lap car, with bad judgment on Derek's part. Derek actually got his spot back but could not hold it due to bent front end. It was all good. Now we are on to Richie's feature. Richie started in last and slowly moved up the field. On a restart with 5 to go Richie's muffler feel off but he stayed on the track. On the last lap he made a pass for the win but the yellow was displayed sending it back to a green white checkered. This was a good thing for Richie because without his muffler it's a disqualification. We brought Richie into the pits and put a new muffler on and ended up 7th in the race. Even thou we didn't win the feature races we made big strides on making Richie's car better, and helping Derek's dad Joe get a better feel on how to change the car. I also had a bunch of fun and that's what it was all about when I go back to the track I started.

Next week I will finally be back racing again at Waterford Speedbowl. I have a bunch of friend in the area coming to see me race. Hopefully I will have good news next time.

Helping a friend out

It was first time at Hudson Speedway, I turned it into a day of learning for the driver I was helping out, Robert Rund, driver the 64 Road Runner. Robert is one of my sponsors and I decided to return the favor by assiting him for the day.

We started off the day trying to find a bog at full throttle. He went out in first practice with a jet change in the carburetor from the week before hoping it would fix it his issue. When Robert came in he noted it was still bogging but it was much better. Also, on the good side, the water temperature of the car stayed at 190 degrees instead of going to 210 degrees. That was a improvement. We continued to try and find what the problem was before the heat race. We could not think of anything, but I mention to Robert a few things to try.

Robert started 7th in the heat race. He cleared the carb out just before the start of the race and it made the car pull better but still not great. He finished the heat in 5th place. With the exception of the bog, the car handled really good, and all Robert had to do was slow his hands down and it would be perfect. I told him to focus on that and we went on to the feature race.

Robert started 15th in a field of 17. Robert stayed in the back making laps and keeping the car in one piece. He picked off cars here and there and moved to 12. After a late race restart Robert dueled it out with a car and beat him to the line which was some excitement for him. To be battling and have power to stay with other cars was a small victory. Even thou Robert still has the bog, I would say the race was good. We learned a bunch together and hopefully can make more improvements to make Robert even faster next time.

Successful Nascar Debut for Sarah Cornett-Ching in the A&W "Cruisin' for a Cause" Chevrolet

July 23rd 2011- Motoplex Speedway Vernon BC, The Nascar Canadian Tire Series rolled into Vernon, BC with an eager young rookie ready to take to the track; Sarah Cornett-Ching was set for her Nascar debut in the A&W 300 at Motoplex.
The deal with Jason White Racing had fallen into place just weeks before the event and Sarah hadn't been in the car more than 20 minutes to fit the seat. With such a huge opportunity at hand Sarah and her team prepared themselves as best as they could in the days leading up to the event and even acquired last minute sponsors to make it all possible
When Saturday finally rolled around the team had already been through pre-race inspection and had a safety check completed. Racing in a more structured series proved more involved than expected as the team had never been through such a rigorous tech inspection.
The cars hit the race track at 1:30 sharp for practice, her first time ever behind the wheel of a Nascar style car and there were many changes that needed to be made for more driveability. At the end of practice the #25 "Cruisin' for a Cause" Chevrolet was 16th of 21 cars.
Starting at the back of the field and staying out of trouble was the plan for this youngster, which she did with ease. Everything was going to plan running as high as 9th and managing to stay on the lead lap until lap 286 when contact with a lapped car would cut down the right front tire sending her car into the back straightaway wall.
Visual damage sustained included two flat tires so the crew went to work and had the car back out for the lap 290 restart. Unfortunately the handling would be ill after the contact with the wall and eventually the car would spin out of control due to a broken trailing arm mount.
Despite not taking the checkered flag Sarah finished 14th of 21 cars and definitely had a successful debut, Sarah looks forward to more races in this Series and more competitive finishes to come.

my race day at seekonk open wheel wednesday

Right when we showed up, I learned that the track was very slippery and that was something new to me. I started off in the first practice driving the car in too deep and spinning out. From that moment on, I started backing up my corner and adapting to a hot, slippery surface. In round two of practice, I needed to learn how to bump start the car because the battery had died and would not start up (shouldn't have left the fan on). After the car got going, I quickly went back to the progress from practice one. Near the end of the practice, I gave everyone a scare. I hit the bump going into turn 3, and it sent me spinning. I went to save the car, but it suddenly turned right towards the wall. Luckily, I got the car slowed down and stopped before it made contact with the wall.
After practice was concluded we had a long break until the heat races and feature races. I went and found the announcer to hand him my press release for this race. To start off, he remembered who I was, and the last time we raced at Seekonk was about two months ago. When I started talking to him about the press release he stated "Hey this is the same press release on Facebook. I've already read this." I thought it was cool to hear the announcer has already read my press release before I hand it to him at the track. After I was invited to be in the autograph session the track was holding. It was very cool to meet the fans that come to watch us race. Meeting with the fans

In the heat race, I started in 9th position out of 11. Right as the green flag was thrown, I Started turning laps and making sure the car would make the feature in one piece. I was still in 9th place when a caution came out for a single-car spin. I restarted in 8th position. I did not stay there long. I quickly moved up to 5th spot where I stayed to finish the heat race in. I was extremely happy about how the heat race went.

In the feature race, I started 19th out of 21. Right as the green flag was thrown, I started battling for position. The first few laps it was between four of us but a few laps in, I found myself battling with 10 cars. I kept my head-on straight and paid attention to make sure I won't get in a wreck but still move up to position. During lap 12 when I was battling for the position, I started hearing the car break up. I looked down and saw the car was at 250 degrees. I decided to pull the car off to save the engine to make sure I can race the rest of the season. Later we found out the overheating problem was caused by an air pocket in the engine.

When I was talking to my Dad about the car and how it handled, I had a surprise guess come to my trailer. It was Mark Taylor a friend who let me drive his 750 sprint car. It was very cool to see Mark. Before the conclusion of the night, we wrapped up a sponsor deal with Mark that was based on how well I did on my report card for school. It was cool to see my hard work in school help out in racing. I have to Thank Taylor's energy for coming on board.

When I look back at this race, it was a great learning opportunity for me. I learned how to back up my corner, and learn how to read a track better if it's slippery or has a lot of grip. I also learned how to battle with many cars without touching anyone. I was four wide at one point and never touched anyone. I believe when you learn how to battle with multiple cars at once and not touch you have really done good. This also reflects that people in my division have respect for me to run me clean. I believe that can go a long way, and I've been trying to build that respect from the beginning.

RACE 101 student Cornett‐Ching to make NASCAR debut Saturday in Vernon, British Columbia; Penticton racer to realize her dream behind the wheel

RACE 101 Student Sarah Cornett-Ching

July 20, DENVER, NC –RACE 101 student Sarah Cornett‐Ching will realize a dream Saturday when she straps into the Cruisin’ for a Cause‐sponsored #25 Chevrolet to compete in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series in Vernon, British Columbia. The Penticton, British Columbia 20‐year‐old couldn’t believe her ears when NASCAR driver and team owner Jason White called her just a couple of weeks ago.

“I wasn’t really sure why Jason White would be calling me,” said Cornett‐Ching. “When he said he might have an opportunity to drive one of his cars at Motoplex Speedway I was blown away. The short time since then has been surreal.”

White and his partner Rob Zimmer entered a Cruisin’ for a Cause car driven by his brother Jim White in 2010. This year he chose to offer the ride to Cornett‐Ching. “Cruisin’ for a Cause is an important event for my main marketing partner A&W Restaurants,” said White. “I’ve watched Sarah for a couple of years now. I know she’ll do a great job as an ambassador for the sport and for the charity event.

“RACE 101 was a big part of my decision. I watched the progress of its students in 2010, and when I saw that Sarah was in the program this year I knew that she would be prepared for everything that’s in store for her.”

On August 25th, A&W hopes to raise $1 million for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. The same event brought in $700,000 in 2010. All 738 A&W restaurants nationwide will donate one dollar from the sale of every Teen Burger to the MS society on August 25th.

At only 20 years old, Cornett‐Ching feels ready to tackle the challenge of a NASCAR stock car and the responsibility of representing a worthy cause. The charismatic welder by trade is an accomplished race car driver who has made a big impression with the RACE 101 faculty.

“Sarah is something special,” said RACE 101 Founder and instructor Tony Blanchard. “Having the ability to drive a race car is one thing, but showing the tenacity to execute public relations strategies, arrange media interviews, and do all the little things that create success is what sets Sarah apart.”

Cornett‐Ching progressed this year from street stock race cars to the ARCA West OK Tire series which travels throughout BC racing at various speedways. She has scored a few top‐five finishes and turned plenty of heads with her charitable work. Recently Cornett‐Ching visited the BC Children’s hospital to spend time with the kids and share stories of her racing endeavours.

“Sarah exudes the qualities a professional race car driver needs,” said RACE 101 Media Relations Instructor Adam Ross. “She will appeal to almost any corporate sponsor because she is so comfortable talking with or without a microphone in front of her.”

Cornett‐Ching had hoped to find a ride in the support division during the A&W Cruisin’ the Dub 300 race weekend at Motoplex Speedway. Finding herself in the main event wasn’t on the radar.

“It’s amazing how things can change in a short time,” said Cornett‐Ching. “Three weeks ago I was planning to go and watch the race. I had hoped to get a ride in the support class, but this is far beyond anything I had in mind.”

Cornett‐Ching hopes to finish the race and make a solid impression in her NASCAR debut. From there, anything can happen.

Derek Robbie excited for his second race of the season at Seekonk Speedway during Open Wheel Wednesday
15-year-old phenom looking for another solid race July 20th
BELLINGHAM, MA- Derek Robbie will make his second start at Seekonk Speedway on Wednesday when the family-owned team travels to Seekonk Speedway in Seekonk, Massachusetts. Wednesday will be his 5th Pro Four Modified of New England Series race. The 15-year-old from Bellingham, Massachusetts, drives the family owned DDR Motorsports #27 Limited Pro Four Modified.
Last time Robbie was at Seekonk he did not finish the heat race due to mechanical issues, but he hopes to finish it this Wednesday. In the feature Robbie started scratch on the field in 23rd place and slowly moved up through the field. With 5 to go Derek spun the car battling for 7th position but quickly got control of the car and didn't lose his position. Robbie completed the race in the 7th place position.
"I'm hoping to continue to my steady progress and keep on learning" said Robbie. Derek is excited to come back to Seekonk speedway where he showed the best finish of the season with a 7th place finish.
This season is Robbie's 8th year racing with DDR-Motorsports. He began his career racing Quarter midgets and later a 270 sprint car before getting behind the wheel of the modified.
In Robbie's last race he debuted at Stafford Motor Speedway during the Extreme Tuesday event. Though the final run down does not display the results everyone hoped for, the team deemed it a good day. During practice Derek quickly adapted to the ultra fast Stafford Speedway. In the heat race Robbie was scheduled to start 5th, but the 86 car moved to the rear before the green and Derek slid up to the 3rd starting position. On the start, Derek encountered shifting problems. He quickly rebounded and brought up the back of the pack in 8th. Derek remained calmed and quietly started moving forward. At the conclusion of the heat race he found his way in to 4th place.
Next up the feature, where Robbie would start 17th. Derek would not stay there long were he quickly moving up through the field. The first 3 laps saw him get to 14th when he saw two cars begin to spin in front of him. Quick action allowed Derek to miss them to claimed the 12th position. On the restart Robbie garnered 10th and stayed there for awhile running at the back of the lead pack. This until he over drover the corner and lost control of the car and spun. After regaining control of the car he began the long assault to run the field down. When Robbie was making a pass for the 15th spot he got together with the 75 and spun again. This time the caution came out. He would restart 15th and move to 12th when the throttle cable broke and ended his day. Robbie hopes to rebound from the disappointing finish at Stafford and get the top 5 he has been chasing all year.
With the race at Stafford showing a DNF in the record book Robbie keeps his rookie points lead, and increased his margin to second place. Derek also moved into the top 10 in overall drivers points with his finish that evening.

My Visit to the BC Children's Hospital July 9th 2011

We had an absolutely awesome trip down to Vancouver this weekend the only way it would have been better is if when I left I could taken all the sickness away from the kids.
My sister and I left home at 7am for the drive down to Vancouver, and got there in time to have lunch at The Eatery downtown.We had to take the truck so we could bring the hood down with us which made driving stressful. The streets are very skinny and you can be driving along and all of a sudden there are parked cars in your lane. All I could do was trust the GPS because I had no idea where we were and there was a ton of traffic!
We got to the Hospital with plenty of time to spare and then had a hard time getting in touch with the Child Life Specialist who was supposed to meet me there.
When we met up with her we started unloading all my race gear, raffle prizes and props I had brought with us to entertain the kids. We set up the hood for the kids to sign and draw on and it was a huge hit, I showed them all the safety gear I have to wear in the race car and we played some racing videos I had brought along.
We did a raffle for a die cast car, Darrell Waltrip signed hat and some Aarons hats aswell, I signed drivers cards for all the kids, their parents and siblings. It was worth every kilometer we had to drive to see the kids having a new experience and not being cooped up in their rooms. We were unable to take any pictures unless the kids signed release forms due to Hospital rules but they took pictures with me for their own memories.

Our next fundraising effort will be on July 29th at Walmart in Penticton, BC right before the two day Gordie Mannes racing weekend at Penticton Speedway, BC

Sarah Cornett-Ching to Visit British Columbia Children’s Hospital This Saturday; Donations Accepted for Hospital Charity

The BC Children’s hospital is close to the heart for Sarah Cornett-Ching and her family. With her brother spending some time at the hospital several years ago as a patient, the Cornett-Ching family has a lot of gratitude for the hospital and what they do. She has supported the hospital with donations that were accumulated the past two seasons, and is excited to step up and do even more to help out. With her past experience with the hospital, she knows their capabilities, and what they are in need of, and hopes that she can help out even more.

"Our family is grateful for everything the Children's Hospital did for us and now that I have the opportunity I want to be able to give back. I know that these kids are sick and can't leave the hospital, so why not bring some smiles to them" remarked the young driver.

Sarah will be visiting the hospital this Saturday from 2pm to 3:30pm. She will have the hood from the racecar with her, and the young children will be able to sign their names on the hood. The same hood may also be signed by the general public for a donation to the hospital. Sarah will be racing with the hood during the Gordie Mannes Memorial Weekend at Penticton Speedway on July 30^th and 31 to raise awareness for the hospital, and will also be collecting donations during that racing weekend.

Based in Vancouver, BC Children’s Hospital reaches across the province with vital health services that may not be available anywhere else in B.C. Two Great Finishes Racing Double Duty ~ July 2nd Motoplex Speedway 2011

Tires, tires, tires, they were the item of the weekend. We were mounting different tires all day to get the sets we wanted to race in the two different series. Our car was completely different from one set to the other it would stick like glue with the Hoosier tires and slide all over the place on the Goodyears with the same setup.

We had to be on our game all day making changes between races to be legal to race in both series and we were able to pull it off successfully. We battled adversity all day due to a faulty new fuel pump, brake bias issues, and a late race miss fire. Despite these issues we pushed through and made the car work.

In the West Coast Sportsman Series race our car was loose on entry which made it difficult to drive but I was able to hold on for a 6th place run out of 14 cars. During the intermission we had to swap tires, change from a 2bbl to a 4bbl carburetor, change the battery and make a few chassis adjustments. Everything went smoothly during the changeover and we started 3rd row outside. Starting on the outside was difficult and I lost a few spots off the start. With a car that was handling well I was able to pick off cars and work my way forward. With 5 laps to go I was knocking on the door of the third place car, gaining through the corners and losing time on the straightaways with an inferior motor and a miss fire. As the checkered flag flew I came across the line 3 tenths behind the 3rd place Superlate model.

my stafford motor speedway debut

My Stafford motor speedway debut was pretty good. In first practice the car was fast but a tick tight, but was mostly me getting use to the track. The next round of practice we threw on new tires and the car was fast, and tight in the middle went away, which I was very happy about. The third round of practice we weren't expecting but we put the old tires on and ran laps to get me use to running on the track. In this practice I also followed cars to get use to being in traffic.

In the heat race I started 5Th but before the green was thrown the 83 car starting third went to the back and I moved into third starting position. at the start I shifted it into Fourth and the carb did not clear about because late to find when we get back to the garage, one of the ears was cracked and letting air into the carb. After I finally got it cleared out and settled into 7Th, I ran the cars down. I got into 4Th and was on 3Rd's bumper as we were running 1st and 2Nd down, but we ran out of time and I finished 4Th. after the race I talked to the crew chief(my dad) and we talked about how to clear the carb out so it doesn't happen again.

On to the feature were I started 17Th out of 19 cars. once again on this start the carb was not cleared but I got it cleared faster and stayed with the pack. a few laps in to the race I picked off a few cars to be in 14Th when two cars in front of me got in a wreck and the caution came out. I restarted 12Th and picked two cars off to get into 10th on the outside. I ran in the back of the pack with the faster unlimited cars, till I ran out of talent and spun the car out. No caution came out because I got the car going. I ran in 15Th place for awhile and when I was going for 14Th position i got in a tangle with him and spun out to bring the caution out. I restarted 18Th. Right away in 5 laps I moved up to 10 position till the caution came out. with 6 to go i was restarting 9. When I hit the gas pedal the car jumped, then died. After figuring the problem out I sow the throttle cable broke and I pulled in. I'm just glad it didn't stick wide open. I finished in 14Th position, but keep the rookie points lead. The car was fast and had something for the faster unlimited cars, as my car is the limited motor(stock).

The really good news was the announcers were talking about me all night. It was cool to impress a announcer that announces for several big race tracks in new England. The other big guy i impress was Ben Dodge. He is a huge race promoter in the new England area and its hard to catch his eye, and i did. All he kept saying was wow that kid is only 15. I was really happy about that and hope to meet Ben some day.

Sarah Cornett-Ching Back to Double Duty in 2011

This weekend at Motoplex Speedway the Super Late Model Trick Series will be visiting as well as the local West Coast Sportsman Series show. Our car will be able to race in both classes with minor changes, it will be a great opportunity to have more track time and be in a faster field.
I will have to be on my toes throughout the night between switching the setup back and forth and running two races back to back for a total of 235 laps. I will be racing with a new field of drivers and the lap times will pick up quite a bit as well, which means with our brake package I will have to conserve my brakes. We will use the extra laps to tune the car and give me an opportunity to race up a series, all track time is good track time and I learn something every time I get out on the race track.

We have a few preparations to make so that we can have the car ready to make quick changes between races to be competitive in the Super Late Model Series on July 2nd at Motoplex Speedway, Vernon, BC

Sarah Cornett-Ching Scores 8th Place Finish~PGARA Speedway Prince George, BC

We left our hometown of Summerland, BC at 7:30pm Thursday night for the long drive to Prince George for the weekend's race. We arrived in Prince George at 11am Friday morning just in time for our appearance at the Prince George Secondary School to promote the Arca Series being in town and to campaign Keeping Racing off the Streets.
The appearance was a huge success, the kids loved the race car and had a great time with the question and answer period too. We had police officers there to help send the message across to the kids just getting their drivers licences. CKPG news did an interview with my dad and myself that aired on the 5 o clock news, and I was able to spread the word over the radio as well.
After we finished up at the school we took the car over to the Ok Tire, our series sponsor to have on display. We were the only car in the whole series to make the effort to support our series sponsor and were recognized for that.
Saturday was race day and we started off the day with one loose race car, I was learning the track and trying to get my car adjusted at the same time. We worked our way closer and closer to having the car dialed in, and by the time qualifying rolled around I was happy with what we had. I left some on the table in qualifying due to over driving the 3/4 corner, which put us on the pole for the heat race.
I got a great start in the heat race, but an early caution ate up my lead. On the second restart I had another awesome start leaving the field within two laps. Another caution due to a competitors exhaust falling off the car forced me to try the restart for the 3rd time. This time coming to the green flag the car to my outside gave me a door slam throwing off my restart and I fell back to 3rd. With only a few laps left I was unable to advance my position and ended up 3rd in the heat.
I voluntarily started at the back for the main event knowing the race would be riddled with cautions. A few laps in, light contact caused my rad shroud to close up a bit, and during a long red flag for a roll over the car overheated.
After the red flag was lifted I started the car and it didn't run for long before vapor locking in the fuel system forced me to be pushed off the race track.
Once we had the car running again we got back out just a lap down, I was able to hold my line for the rest of the race hanging on for an 8th place finish. Overall we had a decent car, I learned a lot about the track and we came home with the car in one piece.
Our next race is at Motoplex Speedway in Vernon, BC on July 2nd.

Derek Robbie excited for Monadnock Speedway debut
15-year-old phenom looking for solid race

June 19, BELLINGHAM, MA- Derek Robbie will make his Monadnock Speedway debut Saturday when the family-owned team travels to, Winchester, New Hampshire. Saturday will be his Third Pro Four Modified of New England Series race. The 15-year-old from Bellingham, Massachusetts, pilots the DDR Motorsports #27 Limited Pro Four Modified.

This weekend's race is important to Robbie for two reasons. He hopes to log laps to get the handle of the car, and show more improvement from the steady progress he's shown to date. He also gets to race in the victor Johnson Memorial Day race who is a close friend to Derek. "I'm glad they named this race weekend after victor who is a car owner, driver, friend to most of us and a dad" stated Derek.

This season is Derek's 8th year racing with DDR-Motorsports. He raced Quarter midgets and a 270 sprint car before getting behind the wheel of the modified.
"I am very excited to make my debut at Monadnock Speedway," said the Bellingham High School freshman. "I am anxious, but at the same time I'm confident entering this weekend's race."
Robbie's Debut at Seekonk Speedway in Seekonk, Massachusetts, was a great day. He started the day off with 20 good practice laps. Derek says that any time he spends in a race car is all ways good. Then he moved on to the heat race where he started 12 and was up to 6 place in 2 laps when he then was unable to finish the race due to the air cleaner coming off.

In the 25 lap feature he started last in 21st position. Derek started the race off making some laps in the back to keeping the car in one piece. At a lap 9 restarts Derek started moving up when he went from 15th to 10th where he stayed for a few laps before picking off 2 more positions to put him in 8th place. With 5 laps to go Derek had a scary moment, by spinning the car out. Derek got control of the car to not lose any positions. Then he continued to bring the car home in one piece and grab his first top 10 of the season with an 8 place finish. After the race a top 5 finisher got dqed and Derek moved up to 7.

With that start he became 6 points back in the rookie driver points in the pro four modified race series of New England. Derek Robbie has several sponsors on board this year helping him. Race #3 in the Arca West Ok Tire Series Race at PGARA Speedway in Prince George BC

Accomplished young Arca West Series driver Sarah Cornett-Ching will be in Prince George this weekend for the Mr Quick Lube and Oil 100 at PGARA Speedway. Aside from the Saturday night race Sarah will also be making an appearance at Prince George Secondary School to have a meet and greet with the students and have the race car on display prior to race day.

Sarah will be signing autographs and handing out hero cards at Prince George Secondary School on Friday afternoon at 11:30 for the students, teachers and fans. Racing is on Saturday June 18th with time trials at 6:00pm and racing starting at 7:00pm. There will also be an opportunity after the race to meet with the discerning young driver.

This is Sarah's first year in the Arca West touring series and her first appearance at PGARA Speedway. " I'm excited to be in Prince George and have the opportunity to try a new track again this week. We will have to work on the car and my driving style throughout the day, but I'm confident we will be able to have a strong night." says Sarah.

Only three races into the season Sarah has already shown great potential and is eager to jump head first into new challenges. She will be put to the test while racing against a field full of drivers who have already tried their hand at this Prince George event.

Race 101 students have been working hard on their social networking skills to promote their race programs. 16 year old Anthony Perez came up with a unique idea to get fans to follow his racing news and updates on Facebook and Twitter. He had decals made for the back of his race car that say: "As long as you are back there, follow me on Facebook and Twitter." He included his Facebook and Twitter links on the back bumper of his Pro-Six stock car that he races regularly at Langley Speedway, in Hampton, Virginia. Perez is currently leading the rookie points for his division and has been gaining a good following both on and off track.

My weekend

This past weekend I didn't race, but i helped out one of my friends Richie Morocco. He raced at Thompson Speedway at the quarter midget track. This weekend was the USAC brickyard qualifier. He raced three division. They were the Honda 120 the Honda 160 and a mod. the hole weekend there was rain on and off. On Saturday qualifying Finlay started around 2 o'clock. The 120 Honda was 2 tenths off fast time but he went first with a green track. Then in the 160 he qualified 7Th. Then in the mod he qualified last then after talking to the car owner, we decided to park the mod due to the lack of speed and engine power. On Sunday, race day, The driver Richie got 2ND in his 120 after having to go thou the field with no caution. Then in the 160 Richie was driving the wheels off the car. On the last lap Richie was going for position and spun out. The car was really fast saying it was a last minute setup. All in All i was really proud off the weekend my friend Richie had and i hope to go again on another off weekend.

Career best finishes and numerous wins for RACE 101 drivers

June 6, 2011, DENVER, NC – Students and graduates of RACE 101 presented by Howe Racing Enterprises enjoyed success across North America this weekend with numerous victories and career best finishes.

Topping the list of achievements was current student Trevor Sanborn winning the Pro Series late model feature at Beech Ridge Speedway in Scarborough, Maine. Sanborn’s accomplishment is significant because it is the first win for the RACE 101-designed Howe late model.

“We had a great night at Beech Ridge,” said Sanborn after the race. “We had two features to run, and the car just kept getting better all night long.”

Sanborn started 12^th and 14^th respectively in the two events, and he scored a win along with a fourth place finish.

Elsewhere RACE 101 graduate Adam Leslie earned his first career victory in the DIRTcar Sportsman division at Merrittville Speedway near Niagara Falls, Ontario. Leslie came close a week prior leading 29 of 30 laps at Humberstone Speedway, but this time he kept the lead at the finish.

“This is so exciting,” said Leslie. “We moved up to the Sportsman division last year, and it was a big step for me. I’m glad we’ve been able to put our education to use. The car was great.”

At Monadnock Speedway in Winchester, New Hampshire, impressive 12-year-old Tommy Stilphen led every lep en route to victory in the Maine Modifieds.

Not every RACE 101 student enjoyed happy endings on the weekend. Young Brandon Atkinson crossed the finish line first at East Lincoln Speedway in North Carolina, but the late model that weighed 100 pounds overweight early in the day came up light by eight pounds. The team has plenty to be proud of, but the results don’t reflect their successful outing.

Sarah Cornett-Ching made her debut in the ASA late model division at Motoplex Speedway near Vernon, British Columbia. She cut a tire with just more than a lap to go passing for a top-five finish, and she had to limp around on a flat right front to wind up eighth.

“It was really disappointing to not finish where we should have,” said Cornett-Ching. “The car was amazing. Tony Blanchard helped us with the shocks, and I couldn’t believe how well the car drove through the center of the turns and off.”

Blanchard is the founder and main instructor at RACE 101 – an acronym for Research, Analyze, Consult, and Educate 1 on 1. Halfway through the program’s second year, Blanchard is content with the progress.

“It’s taken a long time, but weeks like this are the reason we started RACE 101,” said Blanchard. “Our students are using what they’ve learned in so many different applications it’s amazing.

Sarah Cornett-Ching Rallies Top Ten Finish Despite a Last Lap Tangle.

Flourishing young driver, Sarah Cornett-Ching turned heads with her performance at Motoplex Speedway in Vernon, BC last weekend. She was the only female and the youngest competitor in the field in her debut in the ASA series.

Sarah posted a quick time in first practice placing her 4th quickest of 20 cars, and garnering a great deal of attention from her fellow competitors. Her qualifying lap left a lot to be desired with a car on the loose side placing her 9th in the field.

Sarah started on the outside in the second row of the A heat race but was held on the outside lane by a slower car until rest of the field filed under her. She tailed onto the inside lane and began picking cars off one at a time, by the end of the heat race Sarah had managed to work her way up to 6th spot.

Again in the main event Sarah started on the outside groove and on lap one narrowly avoided a spinning car two rows up. The field was reset because they had yet to complete a lap, and it wasn't long before three cars spread across the entry to turn one brought out the second caution. Cornett-Ching was hard on the brakes, and luckily one of the cars began sliding down the track giving her a lane to steer clear of a pile up.

From there to lap 110 Sarah maintained a consistent lap time and began passing cars and moving up through the field. Unfortunately she came up on two cars that raced side by side for several laps slowing her lap times considerably. When given the chance she pulled out and made the pass on the first car, as she did the caution flew and they were put back to the last completed lap forcing Sarah relinquish the position she had just made.

With 11 laps to go there were 7 lapped cars between Sarah in 7th position and the leaders, when the race restarted she waited patiently worked her way through the lapped traffic and then began to make her move on the 6th and 5th place cars.

She easily passed the 6th place car and set her sights on the next position. Sarah had gotten the nose of the car underneath the 5th place car but as backed out a few times due to his threatening loose condition. With two laps to go Cornett-Ching made a crossover move that landed her door to door with the 5th place car. As she began to accelerate down the back straightaway, he side slapped her car cutting down the RF tire. Coming around to the white flag on a flat tire Sarah made the decision that she was still going to finish the race. She limped the car around to take the checkered flag incredibly not losing a lap and hanging on for an 8th place finish.

" It was a disappointing end to such a successful day" Said the exasperated youngster after her first 125 lap race. " We had a great car and I think we were able to showcase that, just couldn't bring home the top 5 finish we had worked towards all night"

RACE 101 Presented By Howe Racing Enterprises scholarship student, Trevor Sanborn won this weekend (June 4th) at Beech Ridge (ME) in the new "Howe 101" super late model chassis. This marks the first win with the chassis that was designed for Howe Racing Ent. by RACE 101 owner/founder Tony Blanchard. I raced at seekonk speedway yesterday. During the heat race i was unable to finish due to the air cleaner braking. Then in the feature i toke the first 9 laps easy then on the restart of lap 9 i went from 15 to 9 in 6 laps rode there trying to get the field then spun out with 5 to go. kept the car going and just got lapped on the last lap to finish 8. then after the race they dqed the leader and i got 7th. over all it was a great first start, and im glad the car is in one piece.

Bittersweet Raceday

The day started out great May 27th. I woke up and it was very sunny, with no chance of rain for the day. I looked out my downstairs window and saw the hauler ready to go. I was up late the night before making sure every last problem was fixed and everything was tweaked and ready to go. I knew it was race day.

We arrived at the track around 10am and parked the hauler where we usually do. I registered the car for the day and mounted the transponder. At 12:30 we fired up the engine and went out for the first practice of the day. The practice went great, the car was a little loose coming off the corners but I pulled off the track very happy with the car. We were were .2 seconds away from being the fastest car during the session. I brought in into the pits and made a wedge adjustment. The next session I was with 1 tenth of the leader. I knew this would give us a great shot at having a top three finish that night.

Next up was the heat race. I started second, but dropped back to 3rd in the first turn. Coming out of turn four on the first lap, the leader and second got together, causing second to spin. It looked like he was going to end up in the infield so I went high, but at the last second the car swung the rest of the way around and sandwiched me between him and the wall. The whole left front of the car was ripped off, and the hood flew at least 10 feet into the air. I was really disappointed and thought we were done for the day. After the tow truck dropped the car at our pit stall, we began putting the car back together. After a new tire and wheel, spindle, upper and lower control arm, and sway bar, the car was ready to get back onto the track. The alignment was way out of whack, but I decided to go out and run the feature anyway. I ended basically turning right going around the turns. The car was VERY loose, but I managed it up until lap eight when the drive shaft broke in half. It must have been jarred in the initial accident and snapped coming out of the turn. After coming to a sliding stop in the infield, I knew the day was done.

Overall it was a pretty good day. The car was the fastest it's ever been and we took a lot of data and I believe we can go back next weekend and have a really good chance of winning it!

2nd Race of the Year is Just Around the Corner

After our first race weekend at Motoplex Speedway in Vernon, BC we were able to learn a lot about the car which was important as we will race there several more times throughout the season. We didn't come away from the weekend with the finish we had hoped for due to a an altercation causing a flat tire but we did prove our car to be a contender. We ended up 14th and still salvaging a decent points night because some of our competitors had wrecks that took them out for the night.
We have our second race at Thunder Mountain in Williams Lake, BC this weekend, I haven't raced there before but am optimistic and confident in the car I will be going there with. From what I can tell from watching videos online of the speedway its quite a different track from anything I've ever raced before. I am hoping to come out of the weekend unscathed and with a top 10 finish, anything better would be a huge bonus.

My Home Town Bellingham Ma memorial day parade

Today I attended my town's memorial day parade, Bellingham Ma. I was invited to be in the parade and I took the opportunity to be in the parade. I had my car on the back of my sponsor Andrew's towing and recovery's flatbed. I Believe I handed out over 100 hero cards and lollipops to all the kids that attended the parade. It was cool to see all the kids faces when they saw the Race car. Its also great to do this parade because we got a bunch more exposure and fans that will be cheering for me to win the race.

It's Finally Race Day!!

Well last night we were sitting in a nice restaurant having dinner with friends planning an early night so we would be well rested for the first race of the year today. Just as we were finishing up dinner I get a text message from a fellow competitor and friend that actually made it possible for me to be ready for this race that says: I'm ok, but I totaled Roxy" Roxy is the name of his race car.
After a short phone call with an exasperated friend we realized what we had to do, forgo our planned and much needed night of rest and help our friend get his car fixed for the big race day. The car was a mangled mess and we cut, welded, tapped, and straightened all night. I bowed out early (1:30 if you can call that early) and went home to bed. I'm not even sure what time dad got home but the important thing is that we managed to get the car mostly fixed just needs some setup work this morning.
Hopefully now it doesn't rain and all this hard work will pay off on Roxy, and everything we did to our car over the off season!

My first pro 4 race at beechridge speedway

With Mother nature having her way the week before, Derek Robbie moved his racing debut up one week by showing up at Beech Ridge Speedway in Scarboroough, Me. on Saturday, April 30 for the Pro 4 Modified of New England 30 lap event. Showing a tremendous amount of excitement as he pulled the gates Derek was ready to tackle his first “big” car race and start his new racing career in the Vacation State.
The day was without any clouds as the team unloaded and prepared for the day’s events. Many of his competitors welcomed Derek and gave him helpful pointers. Special thanks go to eventual race winner Dan Meservey, Jr. for all the guidance he gave Derek throughout the day. Derek quietly going the cars for his first practice and turned some respectable laps staying out of everyone way and learning to feel the car out. A statement by Derek Robbie proved this by when he stated " My goal today was to learn the powers of my modified and gain the respect of my competiors". Unfortunately for Derek the car developed problem near the end of the session and needed to be pushed to the pits. As quick diagnosis discover some valve train issues and an oil pan leak. The decision was made to fix the problem and try to give Derek some valuable seat time. This meant missing the next two practices and attempting to make the qualifying race.
With the crew (and helpers) working tirelessly the car was prepared for the heat and Derek lined up with the rest of his competitors to take the green flag. A quick caution on lap one displayed a slight issue with the oil cap, forcing Derek to pit, while the field was realigned for a restart. Quick repairs were made and he entered the track just as the field was taking the green. Derek ran the 10 laps smooth and hard to complete his first official laps as a modified driver.
Inspection after the race revealed only a portion of the oil leak was fixed and running the complete feature would not be advisable. The decision was to allow Derek to start the feature and then park the car early to avoid damaging the DDR Motorsport #27 and any other cars.
Though it did not turn out to be the start everyone had hoped for the team deemed the day a success as it was the first outing with a new driver and a new car. Look for Derek to make a better showing on May 14th at the Monadnock Speedway in Winchester, NH.

Successful Debut for the RACE 101 / Howe Chassis With Trevor Sanborn at North Wilkesboro Speedway

We could not have asked for a better debut for our brand new RACE 101/Howe Racing Ent. / McGunegill Engines / Chevrolet House Car today at North Wilkesboro Speedway. This being the first race ever for this car, and no less at North Wilkesboro against the top super late model teams in the country at the biggest super late model event of the season, with only one test. This was also the first race that RACE 101 owner and founder Tony Blanchard has ever worked with Trevor Sanborn a driver. The car (running under the Sanborn number of 29 this weekend) was officially fastest in practice today overall and qualified 13th out of 74 cars. They are locked in for tomorrow's event. Blanchard says that he and Sanborn feel very confident that they can have a top ten finish tomorrow, but it is a very long race - anything can happen. The Sanborn/RACE 101 crew are prepared and very optimistic for tomorrow's PASS event - simply called "The Race". April 7, 2011, DENVER, NORTH CAROLINA - Trevor Sanborn’s confidence has never been higher. The Limerick, Maine, standout will need every ounce as he tackles the world’s best super late model competitors at ‘The Race’ in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina this weekend.
The richest event in the history of the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) will run under the lights at the famed North Wilkesboro Speedway Saturday evening. Sanborn partnered with RACE 101 founder Tony Blanchard to take a mighty swing at the $75,000 top prize. He will pilot the RACE 101 presented by Howe Racing chassis with McGunegill horsepower under the hood. Blanchard will call the shots from the pit box, and Trevor’s brother Corey Sanborn will spot.
“We have a good car, and we have a good driver,” said Sanborn. “My confidence boost because of Tony is amazing. He is one smart man.
“The goal is to learn a lot this weekend, but I’m going there to win. I’m comfortable with Corey on the radio, and testing has gone well. Doing well in this race could definitely put my name out there.”

Sanborn races his family-owned and family-funded super late model at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Maine in the summer, and he’s seen moderate success in the PASS series. This weekend will be his first race with Tony Blanchard as crew chief. It will also mark the inaugural outing for the RACE 101 presented by Howe Racing chassis.
“We saw this as an opportunity to work with one of our students,” said Blanchard. “Trevor is a scholarship recipient in this year’s class, and he has a lot of experience.
“Testing has gone well so far. Trevor communicates what he needs, and the Howe chassis has been responsive to the changes we’ve made. We’re ready for this event.”
Accompanying Blanchard and the RACE 101 crew will be engine builder Dwayne McGunegill to lend his expertise to the effort.
“Horsepower won’t be a problem,” said Sanborn. “I’ve done well in long-distance races, and I’ve never felt so prepared.”
Sanborn has run five prior 300-lap races in his career. All were held at Beech Ridge, and Sanborn has three top-five finishes.
“Patience will be key,” said Sanborn. “The first step is getting solidly into the race, and then we’ll want to ride out the first half of the race and stay in contention. Anything can happen.”
While this weekend marks the first competition for the RACE 101 presented by Howe Racing house car there is already plenty of laps on the machine. Multiple drivers have tested the chassis, and this weekend will serve as a great shakedown for RACE 101 premier driver Trevor Edwards when he steps in to compete later in the season.
“Trevor Sanborn’s experience will offer great feedback on the car,” said Blanchard. “Trevor Edwards is a fine young man and a talented racer. He’s going to benefit from Sanborn’s input.”

I'm Mike Mahaney, I'm 21 years old and I'm from King Ferry, NY. I currently race Dirtcar Big Block Modifieds all around the northeast USA. I grew up on our family crop farm crewing for my Dads race team on the weekends. I started driving when I was 14, I had over 30 wins and 5 Championships by the time I was 18 and moved up to the Modified division. After recieving a Machining and Welding degree in High School, I went on to college at Alfred State and earned a degree in Motorsports Technology. I am currently continuing my education with RACE101. I like to exercise with P90X and play basketball to stay in shape, but most of my free time is spent in the shop preparing race cars and figuring out how to make them perform better. I work at Enders Racing Engines. My sponsors for 2011 include: Northern Biodiesel, Shop Crane, Aloi Materials Handling, Wave Energy Drink, and Beyea Headers. Hello, my name is Anthony Perez and I am 16 years old from Suffolk, Virginia. I race in the Pro-Six series at Langley Speedway in Hampton, Virginia. I got my start in racing at age 13 when I started racing minicups with the Hampton Roads Kart Club. I raced my minicups for three seasons in the arena pro summer series and won three races and the championship in the 2010 season. I have also raced my minicup in Arena Racing USA for two years and I have two wins in that series. In 2010, it was the first time I had ever raced a full size race car when I stepped into my Pro-Six. I did five races in that series last year and had a best finish of 3rd (twice) and also got four top fives. In the 2011 season, I plan to race my Pro-Six for the full 13 race season and try to be in contention for 13 wins as well. My main goal is to be the 2011 rookie of the year and contend for the championship.

The RACE 101 Class of 2011

We are in full swing preparing for racing season, and several of our students have started racing already in some of the warmer states. We are continually working with the students on their PR and sponsorship campaigns for this season. Many of them are either excelling in getting a tremendous amount of press or gaining sponsorship or both! As instructors we are encouraging the students to go after the media and sponsors on their own and we are assisting them as needed. We are very proud of this class they are taking what they are learning and applying it to their programs quickly and the results are already impressive for many of them. We will continue to work one on one with the students all year, as well as online classes, Until we all meet again at our NC shop in the fall.

Post first test

The shake down went good besides a power steering line that went bad as we were pulling out for the first run. The line itself was a little short putting it in a bind and started leaking but bucket. chris birdsall and donnie cox got anopther and got in back on so we could go out and run a few shakedown laps. The test was my first ever laps on bumpstops and in a super late model so it took awhile to adjust to the new car and get back ito the rhythm. We plan on taking this week off since tony is going to be a crew chief for Scott Gafforini at teh bullring in las vegas and im sure there gonna be the car to beat out there so keep going to the race 101 facebook and website (race101.net) to se how there doing. ill be back in the car next thusday to keep logging laps.

First test

Hey everyone just wanted to let yall know that were going to test this weekend for the first time. The test will be my first time driving the howe chassis and first time on bump stops so its gonna be a learning curve but i'm positive with tony mentoring me and all ive learned through race 101 were gonna be fine after a few runs then we can build on getting some speed out of the car but everyone come back here and see how we did when i post my next blog on Monday or go to my racing fan page on face book or website TrevorEdwardsRacing.com.

Moving Around

I recently moved back to my hometown to be able to graduate with my lifelong friends, and that's really important to me.

I hadn't seen a farm animal in months, but when I got back that's all my town is - the country. I love it, though. It's so relaxing, and it's an escape from teh crazy world of racing. I'm a senior at Bullitt Central High School, so school and racing pretty much take up my entire life along with friends family and a girlfriend. Even with such a full plate I wouldn't trade my life for anyone else's. It never gets old, and there's something to do every day to improve my career and life as well. I attended the RACE 101 class in Denver, North Carolina, this weekend, and I'll be driving back down from Kentucky to North Carolina to do my first test in the Howe super late model. I'll do a blog about the test and my first real experience driving for RACE 101 the monday after the test, so stay tuned and come back to see more. Well I'm new to this blog stuff. I hear you just write down your thoughts, so here it goes. I'm Trevor Edwards, and I was selected the RACE 101 premier driver.

I come from a small town in Kentucky named Shepherdsville. It's a very relaxing town and the complete opposite of Mooresville, North Carolina where I've spent most of the last year living with my dad chasing my dream of becoming a race car driver.

I drive a rolling thunder modified. I'm the 2010 rookie of the year, and I'm the youngest winner in series history. I'll be drving a super late model for RACE 101 presented by Howe Racing, and we plan to compete in 4 races this year with the CRA series.

RACE 101's Tony Blanchard awards Trevor Edwards with the 2011 Premier Driver Title - Trevor was chose from 14 scholarship students and will be driving the 2011 RACE 101 Presnented By Howe Racing Ent. Super Late Model in competition this season.

January 21, 2011, DENVER, NC – RACE 101 honored its inaugural class recently in Denver, North Carolina, with a graduation ceremony featuring the naming of 2011 premier driver Trevor Edwards.

Fourteen drivers along with friends and family converged for the event including graduates from seven states and two Canadian provinces. The celebration concluded the one-year program created to provide the tools necessary to young racers looking to become great racers.

It was founded by veteran crew chief Tony Blanchard, and the graduation ceremony honoured students who completed the program and introduced 18 students who will comprise the 2011 class.

“We couldn’t be prouder,” said Blanchard. “Our class was eager to learn, and the most rewarding result has been watching them apply things they’ve picked up here.”

By earning the premier driver title, Edwards will compete in the RACE 101 presented by Howe Racing Enterprises super late model this season in selected events.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to drive for RACE 101,” said Edwards. “This is the biggest opportunity I’ve had, and I plan on making the most of it.”

Edwards was impressive on the track this year competing at various speedways in an open-wheeled modified. Even more impressive was his eagerness to learn and apply skills learned with RACE 101.

“We were very impressed with Trevor’s ability to apply the things he learned,” said Anna Marie Malfitana-Strawhand, Director of Marketing and Sponsorship. “He grew a great deal in one year, and we know he’ll represent us well on and off the track.”

With a curriculum balanced between technical knowledge, public relations skills, and an understanding of chassis dynamics RACE 101 was designed to assist aspiring racers in their areas of need. The 14 graduates of the program come from various racing backgrounds with a diverse skill set. Each student is a great source of pride to RACE 101 management.

“Our goal was to provide best practices and a rounded understanding of the racing business,” said Strawhand. “We couldn’t have picked a better group of young racers to execute what we taught them.
